Chicago Chapter spends winning day at the races.

Although some of their bets may have been losers, members of the Chicago Chapter were treated to a winning afternoon of horseracing and hospitality at Arlington Park Racecourse last June--and took care of some chapter business as well. Although the weather was cool and drizzly, attendees of the chapter's annual meeting enjoyed lunch in comfort at the track's Millionaire's Room and were even treated to some tips on playing the ponies from a Chicago-based handicapper.

An important part of the day's business was the awarding of annual chapter-sponsored scholarships to local schools for students who have demonstrated interest in tax. This year, chapter leadership voted to award five scholarships of $2,500 each. Two went to DePaul University students Chris Ehas and Darren L. Mims, two will be awarded in September to students at Northern Illinois University, and one will go to a student at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Chicago Campus. School representatives Ron Marcusson (DePaul), Jim Young (NIU), and Norma Lauder (Illinois) gratefully accepted the scholarships on behalf of their respective universities. In addition, chapter officers and board members decided to use this year's scholarships to honor the memory of Allen Hagen, a Chicago Chapter member who died suddenly in November 2010.
