• U.S. Domestic Natural Gas Supply

• Beyond Business as Usual: Partnerships in Meeting our Energy Challenge

Our Nation's Energy Challenge

• Energy is foundational to our economy and national security

• It underlies our quality of life

• A growing gap exists between energy consumption and domestic production

• Our energy challenge:

• Ensure access to energy is sufficient to support quality of life for all Americans in a manner that protects the environment and provides reliable, affordable energy

The President's National Energy Policy

• Comprehensive, long-term strategy for America's energy future seeks to reduce our rising dependence on unstable energy supplies by diversifying sources.

• The Policy emphasizes no single solution to achieve the goal of secure affordable, environmentally sound energy supply

• We must all work together in partnership on many fronts

• The Policy addresses four primary means of securing our energy future:

• Conservation

• Increasing domestic supplies of traditional sources

• Alternative and renewable resources

• Developing new energy sources

Fossil Fuels: Our Primary Source of Energy

• Oil and gas are the dominant fuels in the U.S. economy

• The gap between consumption and domestic production is widening

• U.S. will increasingly rely on imports of crude oil and gas from Canada and crude oil and LNG globally

• Natural gas supply is especially critical

Alternative and Renewable Energy

• From 1975-2000 renewables increased to 7% of energy supply. Another 33% increase is anticipated by 2020, but is forecast to still be just 7% of supply

• National Energy Policy encourages development of cleaner, more diverse portfolio of domestic energy supplies

• DOI is evaluating ways to increase the use of biomass:

• National Fire Plan hazardous fuels reduction program could supply organic matter source

• Recent joint BLM/DOE reports...
