§3.1 INTRODUCTION

This chapter discusses CR 3, which governs the commencement of an action. Under CR 3(a), there are two ways to commence an action: (1) file a complaint or (2) serve a summons and complaint. The remainder of CR 3—CR 3(b)-(d)—refers to statutes that address the commencement of an action for purposes of tolling the statute of limitations, obtaining jurisdiction, and filing a lis pendens. This chapter does not address specific limitations periods.
