As can be seen, the role of court-appointed neutrals in a high-conflict parent responsibilities or parenting time case is often complex and difficult. High stress can lead to burnout, and the low pay can lead to a lack of energy to do a good job. Attorneys who undertake to represent or investigate the best interests of a child, or to serve as parenting coordinators, decision-makers, or arbitrators, must do so with care, understanding, preparation, and a willingness to step in and make recommendations or decisions in difficult cases.
