Boost your board’s nancial
contributions
Each board member should make
a financial contribution to the or-
ganization. In fact, this should be a
requirement for serving on the non-
profit’s board of directors.
There are sound reasons for ask-
ing for this commitment from trust-
ees. Board members can’t effectively
ask others to give if they have not
given themselves. Foundations and
corporations often expect this of the
nonprofits they support. Also, an-
nual contributions help fund the or-
ganization’s programs and services.
In addition, a financial gift to the
nonprofit they support is significant
as a sign of deeper board commitment
and involvement with the organization.
If your goal is a financial gift from
each board member, consider the fol-
lowing:
At a board meeting, open a
discussion on board giving. Work
through your board chair to place
this topic on the agenda. Have a
board member ask each person on
the board for his or her thoughts on
the topic and to explain the sound
reasons for board members making
a financial gift to the organization.
Contact board members in
writing to request their contribu-
tion. This should be in the form of
a letter signed by your board chair,
chair of your fundraising committee
or your most dedicated board fun-
draiser. Follow up with those board
members who do not respond.
Ask board members to meet with
potential donors. It is very difficult,
even embarrassing, to do this with-
out having first made a personal gift.
Board members will recognize this.
Ask your most passionate board
member to give a testimony at a board
meeting about why he or she gives.
Be sure that all board members
receive your organization’s cam-
paign literature. While this should
be an FYI gesture, include a self-ad-
dressed, stamped envelope to make
gift giving more convenient.
Provide board members with infor-
mation on how to include the organiza-
tion in their wills, as the beneficiary of
life insurance, and information about
making gifts of stock and securities.
If your job description for a board
member doesn’t already include mak-
ing a personal annual gift to the orga-
nization, work through your chair or
governance committee to change this.
Don’t focus on the amount
each board member should donate;
instead, concentrate on the impor-
tance of giving.
Board Member Commitment Pledge
Use this form to help board members identify how they will support the organization.
In support of our nonprot and its work on behalf of the people we serve, I pledge to give
