When Sir Robert Peel, founder of the London Metropolitan Police Department and the
point from which American policing evolved, crafted his vision for the ideal police officer—
highly trained, calm, stable, quiet, determined, capable of controlling emotions, presents a
neat and professional-looking appearance, able to generate respect and bring honor to the
police force—all are what he had deemed essential for any police department (local, state,
federal) seeking to select and employ the best qualified for law enforcement work. Also of
significant importance is the necessity of those competing for police officer positions to
be well informed of the qualifications and procedures needed to guarantee this type of
employment.
It is interesting that in what appears to be a publication of its own type, Trautman, writ-
ing from years of experience as police officer, founder, trainer, and director of the world’s
largest provider of police officer training, provides information that contains practical,
time-proven actions designed to equip and to teach applicants not only the necessary skills,
knowledge, and abilities to obtain law enforcement employment, but to also maintain one’s
position as a law enforcement officer.
Moreover, the skills emphasized through Trautman’s publication can also be of great
benefit to law enforcement officers in their attempts to move through the ranks (promotion,
etc.) with ease, once employed. It is interesting that the book title itself, Landing a Law
Enforcement Job
, is very appropriate and timely in that police departments across the
nation continue to be hard pressed to staff their departments with well-qualified applicants,
