time to then engage in more detailed study. Certainly, it could also be argued that for
students, facilitating their work to such an extent could be damaging. After all, writing case
briefs is an essential legal skill to be acquired. However, the book is far from sparing
students work. Not only does there remain plenty of cases in the casebook for them to sink
their teeth into, but by tackling the basics, the book gives them time and space to engage
more thoroughly with their current casebook and maybe to read some fundamental cases in
the original text. For the ex-student or the layman, the book has the advantage of providing
a breakdown of important cases, including the latest ones easily spotted by their dates at
the beginning of each chapter or in the table of contents. The latter gives not only the chap-
ters’ titles but also the cases’ names, references, and dates; it complements well the case
holdings which appear in the preliminary pages (pp. xiv-xxii). Finally, the book offers a
conclusion, in the form of a twenty-third chapter, together with a glossary of terms. The
conclusion is particularly welcome as a panorama of the Supreme Court’s approaches to
law enforcement, with additional references to major articles and books on the subject.
Overall, the authors achieve their aim: “This book is of use to instructors and students seek-
ing to understand the often arcane world of criminal procedure” (p. xiii). It is also undoubt-
edly of interest for the layman or the practicing lawyer.
