Board Service Commitment Pledge

I,____________________________________, pledge that I shall:

• Make a lifestyle commitment to the mission and values of the organization, in all contacts and all contexts, actively

promote the organization, further the mission and support policy.

• Engage in behavior that is, in fact and appearance, legal, ethical and consistent with the mission and values of the

organization, and acknowledge and disclose any conict of interest with the organization.

• Make a sincere commitment of time, talent, energy and enthusiasm to the responsibilities and work of the board and

arrange my schedule to accommodate the demands of the board’s responsibilities and work.

• Develop knowledge and understanding of the organization, its structure, membership, programs, nances and com-

munities, without interfering with the work of the executive director and staff.

• Treat the staff and other board members with respect and dignity and challenge board members to show the same

respect, dignity, fairness and consistency.

• Participate productively in board activities and board-sponsored functions, including but not limited to: orientations,

training sessions, retreats, meetings, receptions and other special events.

• Prepare for meetings in advance and participate productively in discussions.

• Ensure that officers and individual board members understand and act in accordance with the understanding that no

individual officer or board member can commit the organization, either operationally or nancially.

• Allow no officer or individual board member to usurp the board’s role and obligations as a body.

• Serve on at least one board committee or assignment.

• Actively recruit board members and volunteers.

• Serve as a volunteer under staff direction in a program or on a committee of the organization.

• Make nancial contributions annually to the organization as a tangible demonstration of my commitment to the organization.
