No trial lawyer learns in a vacuum. To whatever extent the several editions
of this book contain wisdom of value, it is wisdom learned from the large
number of extraordinary lawyers, clients, and others I have been privileged
to work with in over 25 years as a trial lawyer. Most of the examples in the
book are from real cases—some involving these individuals—but they may
have been modied slightly for simplicity. My apologies to those involved
for anything I may have missed or mistaken.
Any attempt to list all those to whom I owe my gratitude would be a
fruitless exercise—an absurdly long list that would inevitably miss impor-
tant people. However, at the risk of offending others, I do want to thank a
few of those most directly involved in this book, including:
•
The partners, associates, and staff at Holland & Knight, for their
patience and support.
•
My wife, Alix, and our children, Bailey, Schuyler, and Gabrielle, for
pushing me to write and for offering the love and sacrices that allowed
me to do it.
