Wrangell is known by locals as "the hidden jewel," tucked away from the cruise ship crowd and often overlooked by tourists. Despite being a bit off the beaten path and being accessible via water or air only, it still manages to provide visitors with a wealth of amenities and enjoyable activities.

One of the premiere places to stay in Wrangell is Zimovia Bed and Breakfast. Built from the ground up by owners Barb and Mike Rugo, it is situated in a prime location just four blocks from downtown Wrangell and within walking distance of just about everything else. The Rugos have owned the bed and breakfast for 10 years. They met on the ferry coming to Alaska back in the 70's, originally living in a cabin out in the bush and eventually making their way to Wrangell. They started housing friends, students and people coming through the area for free in their home, and enjoyed having guests so much they decided to build the bed and breakfast.

Zimovia's accommodations consist of two rooms, the Garnet and the Aquafian; each has a private entrance, bath and kitchenette. The Garnet has its own sauna. The rooms are soundproof and also have adjoining doors for larger parties. There is wi-fi, satellite television and a communal barbecue area that opens up into the main garden area, which has been featured as part of the community's garden tour.

Other amenities at Zimovia include a complimentary town tour that Barb Rugo provides upon arrival. The tour lasts roughly half an hour and Rugo shows guests several of the local sites and places they might want to explore further. Each morning, a hearty cold breakfast is provided that includes homemade breads, rolls and biscotti, cookies, fruits, assorted beverages, some store-bought items such as English muffins and bagels, as well as Rugo's legendary homemade granola.
