Grants alert (cont.)
Lead Agency Activity in Electrosynthesis
and Electrocatalysis (NSF)
Scope: The National Science Foundation and the
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research
Foundation, DFG) seek applications for the Lead
Agency Activity in Electrosynthesis and Electrocatalysis
announcement to enhance opportunities for
collaborative activities between U.S. and German
research communities and sets out the principles by
which jointly supported activities might be developed.
Deadline: Sept. 30, 2020.
Funds: Up to $5 million for four to 10 awards.
Eligibility: Colleges and universities and nonprot
organizations.
Areas: NSF said it is particularly interested in novel
and fundamental electrochemical reactions and
studies addressing transformations in organic and
polymer synthesis, water splitting (hydrogen/oxygen
evolution) and nitrogen reduction (ammonia production).
Activities include but are not limited to mechanistic
studies; catalyst design, synthesis and characterization;
computational modeling, theory and simulation; and
experimental tool development.

Centers for Chemical Innovation (NSF)
Scope: The National Science Foundation seeks
applications for the Centers for Chemical Innovation
(CCI) announcement to support research centers
focused on major, long-term fundamental chemical
research challenges.
Deadline: Preliminary proposals, Aug. 11, 2020;
proposals, Jan. 14, 2021.
Funds: $9.4 million total. Up to three new Phase I awards
(each up to $1.8 million for three years) as standard or
continuing grants. NSF also anticipates up to one new
Phase II award (up to $4 million per year for ve years).
Eligibility: Colleges and universities and nonprot
organizations.
Areas: NSF said the CCI program is a two-phase
program. Phase I CCIs receive signicant resources to
develop the science, management and broader impacts
of a major research center before requesting Phase II
funding. Satisfactory progress in Phase I is required for
Phase II applications.

Youth Conservation Service (DOD)
Scope: The Department of Defense’s U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers seeks applications for the Youth Conservation
Service Cooperative Agreement announcement to enter
into a nationwide cooperative agreement for training
and education services relating to natural resources
conservation and outdoor recreation management.
Deadline: July 12, 2020.
Funds: $4 million total.
Eligibility: Nonprot organizations.
Areas: DOD said funds are intended to provide young
adults and veterans with real-life work experiences
in stewardship of the environment in all 50 states by
offering opportunities for education, leadership and
personal development to the applicant’s participants,
while providing a high-quality public service in natural
resources/recreation management and conservation.

Kidney Cancer, Concept Award (DOD)
Scope: The Defense Department’s U.S. Army Medical
Research Acquisition Activity seeks applications for
the Kidney Cancer, Concept Award announcement
to support highly innovative, untested, potentially
groundbreaking novel concepts in kidney cancer.
Deadline: Aug. 5, 2020.
Funds: $960,000 total for up to six awards.
Eligibility: Unrestricted.
Areas: DOD said this award mechanism supports high-
risk studies that have the potential to reveal entirely new
avenues for investigation. Applications must describe
how the new idea will enhance the existing knowledge
of kidney cancer or develop an innovative and novel
course of investigation. Research completed through
a Concept Award may generate sufficient preliminary
data to enable the Principal Investigator to prepare an
application for future research.

Kidney Cancer, Translational Research
Partnership Award (DOD)
Scope: The Defense Department’s U.S. Army Medical
Research Acquisition Activity seeks applications for
the Kidney Cancer, Translational Research Partnership
Award announcement to support partnerships between
clinicians and research scientists that will accelerate the
movement of promising ideas in kidney cancer toward
clinical applications.
Deadline: Pre-applications, Aug. 5, 2020; proposals,
Aug. 26, 2020.
Funds: Approximately $3.6 million for approximately
three Translational Research Partnership Award
applications.
Eligibility: Unrestricted.
