Like author Mark Holston, I too rode the Guayaquil-Quito train back in the 1970s, though back then there were no railings or cushions for rooftop passengers, as shown in the photo on page ten [April 2009]; we just held onto the steel ridge in the middle of the roof that ran the length of the car.

Absent as well during the four years I lived in Ecuador were "Ecuadorans," as the country was inhabited exclusively by Ecuadorians. When did the former take over? Was it in conjunction with the government's dollarization move --or does Americas refer to that as "dollarzation?"
