* One frequent theme at the recent Association of the United States Army's annual conference was that the future of conflict is in contested environments where enemies like Russia or China have the technology to sense and see everything on the battlefield.

"We've got to get our heads around fighting under continuous observation," said Gen. James Rainey, head of Army Futures Command.

Coming up as a young officer, everything started with traveling overwatch, bounding overwatch, how to use terrain and where a probable line of contact is going to be, he said.

"You can pretty much skip that part of basic training because now we got to figure out... how to fight when the enemy can see you," he said.
