You have given me the barest degree of hope that all of our citizens are not crazy. It may not help unless many thousands more will join us "gutless wimps" and "sons of bitches" (Editor's Note, November). So often in these weeks since 9-11, I've thought of my father who was in that war to end all war, and he suffered the effects of mustard gas for the remainder of his life. I remember a cousin lost in World War II, and a nephew who came home from the Gulf War emotionally scarred and soon died in a collision with a truck.

Many of your staff will be familiar with Wilfred Owen and his anti-war writings. At the end of "The Parable of the Old Man and the Young," which is his adaptation of the story of Abraham and Isaac, Abraham "slew his son, and half the seed of Europe, one by one." Wilfred Owen was one who gave his life in World War I.

My husband and I appreciate your efforts to spread the words of peace.
