I    copy of the closing checklist o the printer and

walked back to my oce, feeling light. I’d been working around the

clock for the past eight weeks to meet the implausible timetable for

closing, and everything was nally coming together. e regulatory

approvals were in hand, all transaction documents were signed, and,

through the magic of wire transfers, Pegasus Partners would become

the proud owner of Highlander Hotels today.

Alex poked his head into my oce. “Big day! Has it closed yet?”

I shook my head. “e funds are set to move at noon.”

“Congrats. I’m sure you’ll be happy to put this monster deal

behind you.” He came in and closed the door. “Have you heard any-

thing about the secondment yet?”

“Nope. But Sadir regaled me with ‘the latest’ this morning and

supposedly Ben makes the announcement aer Memorial Day

weekend every year. So, I should know in a few weeks.”

I didn’t mention that aer Sadir had passed on that tidbit of

information, I’d high-tailed to the bathroom to practice my best

surprised face in the mirror. You’re choosing ME for the secondment?

e one that assures me I’m on partnership track? Palms to the face,

like Macaulay Culkin in Home Alone — too theatrical. Hand cover-

ing mouth, Miss America style—too dramatic. Tiny grin, Mona Lisa

style—too aloof. I’d settled on charmingly surprised à la Jennifer

Lawrence at the Oscars.
