X. BANKRUPTCY
Chapter 9, Title 11 of the United States Code allows local governments to file for bankruptcy if state law allows that. Chapter 9 is discussed in detail in chapter 11 of this book.
As mentioned, several relatively large local governments have filed for bankruptcy recently, including the city of Detroit, Michigan, which is the largest local government to file for bankruptcy in the history of the United States. In November of 2014, the judge presiding over Detroit's bankruptcy case approved the city's plan of adjustment.
