WOW: How Social Media Is Connecting Women of Workers' Compensation

If you are a woman in workers' compensation and not on the WOW Facebook pages right now, you are missing out. In May 2018 I founded the Facebook group WOW—Women of Workers' Compensation. Our members include female judges, attorneys, doctors, claims examiners, adjusters, interpreters, and so on, who work in the field. This group serves women in many ways, including networking, referrals, support, mentorship, education, and much, much more. With nothing to dictate how we organize or communicate, the group exists for discussion of any topic that is relevant to women.

Getting Started

WOW's genesis can be traced to the success of the Women's Caucus for the California Applicants' Attorneys Association. As a member of the Women's Caucus, I have truly enjoyed and benefited from the mentorship, lobbying opportunities, and support from my fellow female applicant attorneys. Attorney Jamie Berenson, a partner at Glauber Berenson Vego, and I wanted this community to grow and succeed beyond applicant attorneys, and we looked for different avenues to include all women of workers' compensation.

I am proud that WOW has cultivated a safe environment of support, respect, and kindness for its members in a world where social media platforms have become a go-to place to spew online harassment and cyber hate. WOW has become a positive community for the women of workers' compensation.
