The world's poorest.

PositionGRAPH * INTERNATIONAL

The article "A Tale of Two Indias" examines the many challenges that country is facing as it becomes a global economic power. As this graph shows, India still has a high proportion of people living in extreme poverty, even as its middle class continues to grow. Globally, the number of people living on less than $1.25 a day--the "international poverty line," according to the World Bank--is on the decline: 1.4 billion people (one in four) in the developing world in 2005 were living below that threshold, down from 1.9 billion (one in two) in 1981.
