Baghdad. Tikrit. Kabul. A few years ago these names sounded distant, even unreal, to many of us. But as 2003 winds down, these cities in Iraq and Afghanistan--along with others in the Middle East, Asia and other parts of the world--make frequent appearances in the news, and on some days, seem all too familiar.

In the age of the Internet, 24-hour news channels and global terrorism, even the most far-flung parts of the world don't seem as remote as they might have even three or four years ago, and they have certainty become a lot harder to ignore.
