To better understand the data, read the explanations accompanying the sample entry for South Africa on the facing page. On each map, you'll find photos and summaries of major news events in that region. We hope you'll keep this issue for year-round reference and that it will help you make sense of what's going on in the world as we head into 2019.

This striking new footbridge in the hills outside Danang, Vietnam, is attracting many visitors. As Vietnam's economy has boomed in recent years, its tourism industry has flourished. After decades of tensions in the aftermath of the Vietnam War (1965-75), relations between the U.S. and Vietnam continue to improve.

Before Reading

1 Set Focus: Pose the following essential questions: What are atlases and almanacs? How can they help us make sense of current events?

2 List Vocabulary: Share with students some of the challenging vocabulary they'll need to make the most of World Affairs 2019 (see right). Encourage them to use context clues to infer meanings as they read.

3 Engage: Have students discuss times they have used or could use an atlas or an almanac.
