Working Simultaneously
on a Document
Now that you have a good understanding of the major play-
ers in the online document creation business, it’s time to get
started on actually creating your own documents. In this chap-
ter, we’ll introduce you to the world of online document col-
laboration by showing you how to create a simple document
using two of our favorite tools: Office Online and Google Docs.
We selected these two because they are easy to use. However,
we expect you’ll find that any of the other online document
tools are also user-friendly and simple to learn. Once you have
Office Online and Google Docs mastered, the other tools in this
category will be a breeze to figure out. You’ll also have a base-
line for evaluating and comparing the other products.
Creating and Working on a Document with
Word Online
Let’s jump right in and get started. Before you can create a
document in Office Online, you’ll need an account. Fortunately,
getting a Microsoft account is easy and free. Visit the Microsoft
Word Online page at https://office.live.com/start/Word.aspx.
Click Sign Up for a New Account, enter your email address and
a password, and you’re all set. You can immediately start cre-
ating a Word document.
Creating a New Word Document
When you first start the app, you’ll be shown a screen that
offers a number of templates, as well as recent documents in
