The district court denied the defendants' motion for summary judgment on the basis of qualified immunity and the appeals court affirmed. The appeals court held that the murder of the prisoner was "sufficiently serious" to constitute a violation of the Eighth Amendment, that officials were deliberately indifferent to threats to the prisoner, and that officials acted unreasonably in taking no action to protect the prisoner.
