Set in small-town Texas, this novel is filled with many characters who all come together in the same single parenting class taught by a woman, Anne Hamilton, who has never been married or had a child. The people who come to the class are equally handicapped by their lives, especially Mary Lou, whose Gypsy truck-driving husband has just died in an accident and whose 14-year-old daughter, Echo, has run away from home. The other students have almost equally intriguing stories to tell, but their lives soon revolve around Mary Lou's plight.
