When we first began to think in terms of learning more about the top women business leaders in Alaska a few months ago, we were really genuinely thrilled about the project. And we haven't been disappointed. Our introduction that describes the many who form this unique class of business leaders begins on page 40. We know you will find it interesting.

Nearly everybody knows of a few standouts in business who are women, but we were not prepared for the huge number of businesses owned and operated by women that we knew nothing about-until now. As it has turned out, very competent women hold forth in many of the traditional "male bastions of power," such as engineering, construction and mechanical repair, for example.

They are wives and mothers, soccer moms and single moms. A few are students and others are grandmothers, but all are making it by will and wits, and in most cases, with a lot of preparation and hard work, and net worth or cash flow...
