With new OT rules, confirm compliance on time sheets.

Starting on Jan. 1, exempt employees who earn less than $684 a week must be classified as overtime-eligible nonexempt employees.

One of the most basic wage-and-hour compliance tasks is ensuring you know exactly how many hours those new nonexempt employees work every week. Your compliance tool: a properly completed time sheet.

To be in compliance, make sure your employees' time sheets are:

* Accurate and complete. Time sheets should reflect all of employees' working time. Action item: Remind employees that time sheets on which they write all 7s or 8s are not acceptable. Also remind employees to not work off the clock, not to take work home without permission and to record their flex time as time off.
