Progressives and organized labor made a blunder of epic proportions in the recall effort against Scott Walker ("What's at Stake in Wisconsin?" by Ruth Conniff and Matthew Rothschild, June issue). By running the same candidate who lost to Walker in 2010, they almost guaranteed the same result. Moreover, all of the coverage of the recall election, even in The Progressive, focused on the need to defeat Walker, while there was never any mention of the other candidate and his attributes. Such a purely negative focus alienated voters in the center, who determine the outcome of nearly all elections. The recall effort may have even enhanced Walker's chances of being reelected governor in 2014, as a fatigue factor sets in.
