The February issue of State Legislatures magazine contained an informative article about the role of legislative service agencies in providing reliable, nonpartisan research services to state legislatures. One of these agencies is the Wisconsin Legislative Reference Bureau (LRB), which has served the information needs of the Wisconsin Legislature and the citizens of our state for over a century.

When it was established in 1901, the LRB was the first agency of its kind in the nation to provide professional staff support to a state legislature. Over the years, it has served as the model for similar offices in other states, as well as the Congressional Research Service of the Library of Congress.
