On the other end of the phone line, my friend was laughing so hard she could hardly speak. "Tim, have you seen today's News & Observer?" I hadn't. "Someone we know is in the news. Any guesses?"
I was stumped. One guy we grew up with in Chapel Hill went into politics. Another owns a locally famous rock 'n' roll club called the Cat's Cradle. Otherwise, nobody was doing anything newsworthy. Our high school, being full of kids from university families, had produced more than its share of lawyers, doctors and college professors. But that just meant we were better-paid and more pompous, but no less anonymous, than the carpenters and cops from rival schools in Hillsborough and Durham.
"He's petitioning Chapel Hill to change the name of his street. It's called Unwin. Apparently that makes him and his wife feel like losers. Got a guess now?" Nope. She said the name. "No way," I responded. (Actually, what I said was a little more colorful than that, but my mom reads this column.)
The guy -- let's call him Chet -- was a year behind me in school. We played soccer together but didn't really know each other well. Truth is, his friends were far more presentable than mine. Back then, I was mainly concerned with writing for the school newspaper and finding places that would sell beer to minors. I got good-enough grades, but that was purely pragmatic: Dad would ground me if I didn't, which meant taking away the keys to my avocado-green Plymouth Valiant.
My friend went on to read the N&O story over the phone. In it, our schoolmate explained his thinking. "'Unwin' seems to most people to be a synonym for 'loser' or 'to not win.' I believe [it] reduces our property value and is embarrassing. ... My wife and I had to think hard about buying a property with such a horrible name."
