The campaign staff of Bob Dole recently asked focus groups to name animals the various candidates reminded them of. The most popular descriptions of Phil Gramm were weasel, fox, hyena, ferret, bulldog, and tortoise. Pat Buchanan was tagged as a pit bull, badger, and wolverine. Dole himself was likened to a mule, draft horse, German shepherd, elephant, kangaroo, zebra, and chameleon....

Bill Clinton continues to display his ignorance of military matters. According to John McCaslin of The Washington Times, Clinton, when referring to the bow of an aircraft carrier, pronounced "bow" as in "bow and arrow," and mistakenly identified the USS Missouri--World War II's most famous battleship--as an aircraft carrier....

I try to keep you updated on Kenneth Starr, the Whitewater independent counsel. The latest disclosure is a list of the private clients Starr has represented since taking over the Whitewater investigation. They include Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corporation, Philip Morris, General Motors, Apple Computer, Bell Atlantic, Hughes Aircraft, Amoco Oil, Southwestern Bell, United Airlines, and--I love this one--the Republican National Committee....

Describing the justification by Jordan Levy for the critical vote he cast in the Massachusetts Governors Council to make Charles Fried a member of the state's Supreme Court, The Washington Post's Al Kamen writes that Levy "established a new standard for confirming judges, replacing the test set in 1970 by former Senator Roman Hruska who supported G. Harrold Carswell's nomination to the Supreme Court by saying even `mediocre people are entitled to a little representation'."

"Charles Fried does not have horns and a long green tail," said Levy in explaining his vote. "He's not a rapist, a murderer or pedophile." ...
