President Barack Obama has tapped a former Microsoft executive to replace Vivek Kundra as the new chief information officer for the United States.

Steven VanRoekel, who joined the Obama administration from Microsoft in 2009 as managing director of the Federal Communications Commission, succeeded Kundra, who resigned to take a position at Harvard University, in early August.

Analysts say Kundra helped move government agencies adopt new, more efficient technologies. According to The New York Times, Kundra pushed agencies to adopt new technologies that can improve efficiency, including cloud computing and software, which have reduced the number of computers and data centers needed.
