As noted in "A Town, and Team, Transformed," of the nearly 81,000 refugees accepted for resettlement worldwide in 2005, about 53,000 received permission to live in the U.S. Host were seeking a safe haven from war, persecution, or natural disasters back home.

Where refugees live once they reach the U.S. depends on a number of factors. Many who have relatives already here are resettled near family members. Otherwise, they are often placed in communities where jobs, housing, or social services are available.

The 10 states in the graph on the right account for about 63 percent of art refugees who entered the U.S. in 2005.
