With fears of falling victim to cybercrime and mass shootings topping the list of crime worries among Americans, according to the most-recent Gallup polls, the personal-finance website WalletHub took a look at the Safest Cities in the U.S.

To determine where citizens can feel most protected against life's hazards, including nonphysical forms of danger, analysts compared more than 180 U.S. cities across 35 key metrics. The data set ranges from assaults per capita to unemployment rate to road quality.

The 10 safest cities, starting at the top, are Nashua, N.H.; South Burlington, Vt.; Warwick, R.I.; Columbia, Md.; Gilbert, Ariz.; Fargo, N.D.; Lewiston, Maine; Piano, Texas; Portland, Maine; and Brownsville, Texas.

The 10 least-safe cities, from the bottom up, are Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; St. Louis, Mo.; San Bernardino, Calif.; Oklahoma City, Okla.; Detroit, Mich.; Little Rock, Ark.; Orlando, Fla.; Chattanooga, Tenn.; Baton Rouge, La...
