Up to 71 percent of ambulance rides can generate surprise medical bills, a report by Health Affairs noted. The following are steps you should take if you receive one:

DO YOUR HOMEWORK

"Don't assume that your employer-provided health insurance or other policy will automatically pay the total cost," says Mike Rust, of ABC for Rural Health in Wisconsin. "Determine what your insurance policy covers when you are healthy and don't need an ambulance."

REVIEW THE BILLS FOR ERRORS

"Ambulance companies charge more for drugs, life support, and other services provided during the trip to the hospital," says Tim Hennigan, of ABC for Health. "In addition to checking the mileage, be sure that you received the services listed on the itemized bill."

CONSULT YOUR INSURER TO DETERMINE WHAT PORTION OF THE BILL IT WILL PAY
