Western Political Science Association
The April 2010 meeting of the Association will
be held at the San Francisco Hyatt Regency
Hotel, April 1–3. Christine DiStefano, University of
Washington is serving as Program Chair for this
meeting. Local Arrangements Co-Chairs are Lisa
Garcia Bedolla, University of California, Berkeley
and Melissa Michelson, California State University,
East Bay. Information regarding the conference, its
theme, and the section chairs appears on the WPSA
Web site: www.csus.edu/org/wpsa.
Recipients of 2009 WPSA Awards
The following WPSA awards were presented by
the Association at the 2009 Annual Meeting held in
Vancouver, British Columbia.
The Pi Sigma Alpha Award for the best paper
given at the 2008 Annual Meeting of the WPSA was
awarded to Dr. Margaret Farrar, Augustana College,
for her paper: “Amnesia, Nostalgia, and the Politics
of Place Memory.”
The Dissertation Award was given to Dr. Thomas
Louis Masterson for his dissertation: “Workforce
Diversity in California Community Colleges, 1988 –
2007,” completed at Claremont Graduate University.
The Betty Nesvold Award for the best paper on
Women and Politics was given to Professor Elizabeth
Ben-Ishai, Albion College for her paper: “The New
Paternalism: Forced, but not Free.”
The award for the best paper on Latina/Latino
Politics was given to Professor Jessica Lavariega
Monforti, University of Texas – Pan American for
her paper, “The Awakening of the Sleeping Giant?
Latino Political Participation and the 2006 Immigrant
Rights Protests.”
The award for the best paper on Blacks and Politics
was Awarded to Dr. Sharon Wright Austin, University
of Florida for her paper, “Black Political Incorporation
in Miami-Dade County: Do African Americans and
Haitian Americans Share a Sense of Linked Fate?”
The Charles Redd award for the best paper on the
politics of the American West was given to Professor
Elaine B. Sharp, University of Kansas for her paper,
“The Politics of Eminent Domain Reform.”
The award for the best article published in the
Political Research Quarterly during the previous
calendar year was given to Professor Kathleen Dolan,
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee for her March
2008 PRQ Article, “Is There a ‘Gender Affinity
Effect’ in American Politics?” Honorable Mention
was awarded to Eric McDaniel and Christopher
Ellison, University of Texas at Austin for their June
2008 PRQ Article, “God’s Party? Race, Religion, and
Partisanship over Time.”
Submissions for 2010 WPSA Awards
Instructions and deadlines for paper submissions
and nominations for 2010 WPSA awards may be
found on the WPSA website. The deadlines for most
awards are set for June 15, 2009. And, note the new
award described below.
New WPSA Award for Best Paper
in Environmental Political Theory
At its meeting in Vancouver, the WPSA Executive
Council approved the addition of a new WPSA award.
This new award will be given for the best paper in
environmental political theory presented at the annual
WPSA meeting. Information regarding submissions/
nominations for this award is now available on the
WPSA website. The deadline is June 15, 2009.
WPSA Nominations
The WPSA Committee on Nominations requests
that nominations be submitted for the following WPSA
officer positions:
• Vice President: to serve as Program Chair 2012
annual meeting (Portland meeting). This individ-
ual will serve as Association President 2012-2013
subsequent to service as Program Chair.
• Four members of the Executive Council: two
from Region A (California); one from Region
B (Arizona, Hawaii, Nevada, New Mexico,
Texas, Utah); and one from Region C (Alaska,
Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington,
