COLUMBIA HOUSE CO. Terre Haute; Emp.: 2,400

Established in 1956 to test what was then a novel music-marketing idea, Columbia House has grown to be one of the to two major audio and video clubs in the country, boasting millions of members. At its 600,000-square-foot facility, the company deals with tens of thousands of daily phone calls and about six tons of mail weekly. Together with its 300-employee clerical facility in Bloomington, Columbia House has a payroll of about $50 million.

INDIANA STATE UNIVERSITY Terre Haute; Emp.: 2,020

This university was founded in 1865 as a training school for teachers and enrolled its first 21 students five years later. Today, students at the 90-acre campus come from all 92 Indiana counties, 48 states and territories and 71 foreign countries, and have more than 200 degree programs to choose from in seven schools and colleges. Included in the programs are geography, geology, life sciences, theater, business, athletic training, nursing and computer-aided manufacturing technology.

UNION HOSPITAL Terre Haunte; Emp.: 1,950

Founded in 1892, Union Hospital is a 343-bed not-for-profit regional referral center that specializes in comprehensive cancer, obstetrics, occupational health, emergency services and a full range of inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services. The Midwest Center for Rural Health trains family-practice physicians to practice in rural areas. One of only eight accredited programs in the United States, it is the only one in the Midwest. Construction to bring the Family Practice Center and the Midwest Center for Rural Health under one roof is expected to be completed in 1994. The Ambulatory Surgery Center and Hook Rehabilitation Center also reside at Union.

WESTON PAPER & MANUFACTURING CO. Terre Haute; Emp.: 1,625

This company has three facilities in Terre Haute: the main box plant, the mill division and the corporate headquarters. Other divisions and facilities are scattered around the Midwest. The mill division manufacturers the corrugated medium that goes into the boxes made at the nearby box plant. This company was--and still is--incorporated in Ohio in 1893, but moved its headquarters to the Walbash Valley in the early 1900s.
