BOONE -- Tweetsie Railroad will remain here a while longer (Tar Heel Tattler, August). Leases on portions of its 200-acre site were set to expire at the end of 2006 but have been extended through 2007. General Manager Chris Robbins, nephew of founder Grover Robbins, says escalating land and lease prices could force Tweetsie to move at an estimated cost of $20 million.

ASHEVILLE -- Borg Warner Turbo Systems will spend $40 million to add an assembly line to its factory here, increasing employment by 111 in the next three years. The line will make turbochargers for heavy trucks. The plant currently employs about 700 to rebuild turbochargers and make fans and other automobile parts.

VALDESE -- Martinsville, Va.-based Shenandoah Furniture will start making upholstered furniture here early next year in a renovated textile mill and employ about 100 within three years. It was drawn to Burke County, where several furniture factories have closed recently, by available skilled labor.
