MARION -- Citing pressures to cut costs, Deerfield, Ill.-based Baxter Healthcare, which makes intravenous solutions, announced that it will lay off about 75 of 2,700 workers this summer.

NEWFOUND GAP -- Cell-phone company Cingular Wireless has dropped efforts to put 170-foot-tall cell towers in the Newfound Gap, Collins Creek and Smokemont sections of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Critics said they would damage the wilderness character of the park, visited by 9 million people in 2003.

ASHEVILLE -- Work was set to begin in July on a $7 million building at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College that will house kitchens, a dining hall and a computer lab for its culinary-technology and hotel- and restaurant-management programs. Money to build will come from the college's share of a $3.1 billion state bond issue passed in 2000.

ARDEN -- Construction has begun on the 400,000-square-foot South-ridge Shopping Center, which will include stores such as Target, Marshalls and OfficeMax. It will be completed next summer. Cost was not disclosed.
