An impressive number of insurance companies specializing in property and casualty coverage call Indiana home. Following are profiles on many of these companies, listed in order of assets (for firms involved in both life-health and property-casualty, only assets related to the property-casualty side are listed).

AMERICAN STATES INSURANCE CO.

According to A.M. Best Aggregates and Averages, American States Insurance is the 30th-largest insurer in the nation. Headquartered in Indianapolis, the company is licensed to sell in all 50 states, though marketing efforts are primarily focused on the Midwest and the Pacific Northwest regions.

Started in 1929 as an insurer of automobiles, American States now has a diverse portfolio of products offering protection in the home, at the office or on the highway. A network of nearly 4,800 independent agents markets the company's products. The company is a major national player in small- to medium-size business-insurance coverages. Personal insurance coverages also account for a significant amount of the company's business.

American States maintains four regional offices: two within the Indianapolis headquarters, one in Seattle and one in Fort Scott, Kansas. The company reports property/casualty assets of $4.2 billion, with net premiums written amounting to $1.2 billion. The company employs nearly 3,500 people. Robert Anker is chairman and CEO, and William Lawson is the company's president.

American States is wholly owned by Lincoln Nation Corp., a financial-services organization with headquarters in Fort Wayne.

THE MEDICAL PROTECTIVE CO.

Medical Protective was incorporated in 1909. Underwriting covers physician's and dentist's liability claims for damages based on professional services. Headquartered in Fort Wayne, the company ranks among the top five writers of medical malpractice business in the country based on direct premium volume.

All of the outstanding stock is owned by Medical Protective Corp., a privately held Indiana corporation principally engaged in insurance, investing and finance. Total assets are listed at nearly $1.3 billion, with net premiums written of $244 million. David E. Rosendahl is the company's president and CEO.
