According to Boys & Girls Town of Missouri, St. Louis, any one of the following behavioral or emotional problems can be a sign of potential child abuse. While they do not automatically indicate an abuse situation, when they are seen in combination, they should be reported for further investigation if a youngster:

* Destroys property

* Frequently runs away from home

* Acts aggressively to adults and other children

* Has a hard time trusting others and making friends

* Becomes self-destructive, injuring him- or herself or even attempting suicide

* Suffers sleep disturbances, such as nightmares, sleeplessness, fear of going to sleep

* Abuses drugs and/or alcohol
