Walking on sealed air.

PositionCHARLOTTE REGION

A month after two fast-growing Charlotte companies picked South Carolina for new offices, North Carolina struck back with the recruitment of Sealed Air, the biggest Fortune 500 headquarters score in state history. While the producer of Bubble Wrap is moving its headquarters from Elmwood Park, N.J., about 750 of the 1,263 jobs headed to Charlotte over three years are coming from the Greenville-Spartanburg, S.C., metro. The announcement eased Charlotte's pain after Lash Group, a division of Chesterbrook, Mass.-based AmerisourceBergen, and Boston-based LPL Financial said they are moving more than 2,000 jobs to Fort Mill, S.C. Sealed Air, which is getting $39.2 million in state incentives tied to job growth, preferred Charlotte, with its airport hub and pool of financial and technology workers, to Greenville. They also had an insider's view through Chief Financial Officer Carol Lowe, a UNC Charlotte graduate who joined the company in 2012 after working 10 years at Charlotte-based Carlisle, which makes industrial products. She joined Sealed Air just months before President Jerome Peribere, who was promoted to CEO in March 2013.

Chesapeake, Va.-based Dollar Tree's $8.5 billion cash-and-stock offer, accepted in July, was trumped by Goodlettsville, Tenn.-based Dollar General's $9.7 billion all-cash bid in August. Dollar General plans to cut as much as $600 million in annual costs, raising worries of job losses at Family Dollar's 1,400-employee headquarters here. The combined company would operate about 20,000 stores.

CHARLOTTE -- Spectra Group will open an office here, creating 250 jobs by the end of 2018 with an average annual salary of $84,996, higher than Mecklenburg County's $59,046. The Princeton, N.J.-based bank-technology consultancy will invest up to $2 million and lease a 12,864-squarefoot office. It is eligible for more than $2.9 million in state grants.
