We have, incredibly, reached the fifth edition of Labor and Employment Law for South Carolina Lawyers. We extend our gratitude to all the authors, past and present, who contributed to this work since our first publication in 1999. Thousands of volunteer hours generously offered by lawyers in firms throughout the state have made the book a valuable resource to employment and labor law specialists and to general practitioners alike.
Labor and employment law continues to be an exciting and challenging field, with no lack of work for those willing to keep abreast of the complex and ever-changing state and federal statutes, administrative regulations and court interpretations affecting employment practice. The broad range, complexity and fluidity of employment law makes it difficult to finalize a book on the topic without it becoming dated before the ink has dried. Accordingly, the mindful lawyer will rely on the book for guidance and as a starting point for further research. While the book encompasses major aspects of employment and labor law, space limitations did not allow us to address every cause of action, case or rule applicable to the practice.
Your editors are very grateful for the enormous patience, formatting and cat-herding skills of the SC Bar staff, especially Alicia Hutto and Joanne Kelley, without whom the manuscript would still be in draft form. We also are pleased to welcome our Associate Editor, Grant Burnette LeFever, who assisted with editing and writing while attending the USC School of Law, studying for the South Carolina Bar exam and as an attorney with Burnette Shutt & McDaniel law firm.
We hope you will agree that the fifth edition of Labor and Employment Law for South Carolina Lawyers is the best work of all so far. Enjoy!
Very truly yours,
M. Malissa Burnette
