Hon. Frederic W. Allen

Justice Allen, a lion of the legal profession, died peacefully at his home on April 9, 2016 at the age of 89. Born in Burlington on May 31,1926, Frederic W. Allen was class president, played football, ran high hurdles and was captain of the basketball team that made it to the 1944 State Tournament. Upon graduation, he entered the Navy and later attended Miami University of Ohio and then Boston University School of Law. Frederic Allen practiced for 30 years with John Dinse in Burlington and was a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. In 1984, he was appointed to the Vermont Supreme Court, where Justice Allen remained, issuing fair-minded, clear and thoughtful decisions, until he retired in 1997. Aside from his prestigious and admirable legal career. Justice Allen was an accomplished sailor throughout his life, even purchasing a boat before a home because "you can't sail a house." He enjoyed skiing and played handball until the age of 80. Justice Allen is survived by his wife of 35 years, Karen McAndrew, and four children.

Hon. Elizabeth A. Leopold

Elizabeth Anne Leopold, who was born in New York on November 11, 1954, succumbed to injuries from a fall in her home and died surrounded by family on April 19, 2016.
