What We Teach Each Other

For trial lawyers the experience of what the French call “l’espirit de l’escalier”—the things that occur to you to say after you have departed—is probably universal. Recently, I received the Gerald Mason Award for professionalism. Floating among the flotsam and jetsam of undeserved praise were a few remarks about mentoring that caught my ear. I feel strongly that it is a process that we are all involved in, consciously or unconsciously. This is what I should have said about my legal mentors.
