Domestic Violence

Domestic Violence domestic violence in our communities is a serious concern. In Wyoming, victims of abuse may file for protection orders under the Domestic Violence Protection Act (Wyoming Statutes Title 35, Chapter 21). Jurisdiction for fling a petition is in the Circuit Court of the county where the alleged victim resides or is found. It is in the District Court if the county does not have a Circuit Court.^[1] These are expedited proceedings. Te statutes require the court to hold a hearing within 72 hours after the fling of the petition, or as soon thereafter as possible. Domestic violence protection cases can be challenging for judges and attorneys. Often children are involved and the court must make decisions quickly regarding custody and visitation, without benefit of home studies or additional information.
