Are you ready for some football? NFL Sunday and the Art of Bicycle Maintenance

I arrived in Rome the day after Christmas. In my pocket was an ambitious list of places I wanted to visit during my week-long stay. By Sunday I was ready to watch some football. A Google search pointed me to the Highlander, a Scottish pub in the heart of Rome.

Finding my way through the meandering back alleys that surround the Highlander, I arrived at the small, basement-level pub a little before 7 p.m., game time for the 11 a.m. kickoffs in the States. I entered a bar filled with tourists decked out in NFL regalia. There were pro football games playing on big-screens throughout the pub.

I grabbed a seat at the bar and listened to the good-natured ribbing that was taking place between a family of Lions fans seated next to a table of avid Packers supporters. The atmosphere in the pub was jovial — a bunch of Americans, strangers who shared a common passion, enjoying each others company in an unlikely setting. A young couple from Seattle took the bar stools next to me.

"Seahawks fans?" I asked as I shook hands with Doug and Kristin Walsh.

"Former season ticket holders," Doug nodded. "How about you?"

"Broncos. I'm from Wyoming," I revealed a little self-consciously, the three of us remembering the drubbing Denver had received from Seattle in Super Bowl...
