A LETTER TO MY SUCCESSOR

What is it like to be Bar Counsel? It is the best job I have ever hated.

The opportunities it presents are endless. The chance to grow as a lawyer and as a person, to learn about areas of the law and its practice you have never encountered, to meet and get to know lawyers across the state. You will encounter situations unfamiliar and unfathomable. You will have to be vigilant, patient, compassionate and creative. You will review the work of lawyers of every skill set, some good, some not so good. You will find that most of our colleagues, even when they stumble, are doing their best — their best for their clients, and their best for the profession. You will see that grievances, even those that result in discipline — maybe those especially — represent an educational opportunity for all of us. Some will hate you for doing your job, but more will applaud your efforts.
