Wyoming LawyerIssue: August, 2011MemorialsBy Robert H.JohnsonRobert H. Johnson, 94, retired Rock Springs attorney, died May 19, 2011, in Rock Springs.

Johnson had served for 33 years as an attorney in Rock Springs, and prior to that had worked as an active newspaperman for nearly 30 years, including 10 years as a general manager of the Rock Springs Rocket-Miner. He also served 12 years in the Wyoming State Senate - this service included two years as Democratic floor leader in the Senate and two years as chairman of the Senate Labor committee.

He also served five years in the U.S. Army during World War II as a bomber pilot in England. He was active in a number of community civic projects, as well as serving on various state and local committees.

Johnson was born August 16, 1916, in Denver to Henry and Samantha (Haines) Johnson. He graduated from high school in Cheyenne in 1934.

Johnson graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1938. During his university years, he was president of the Blue Pencil journalism honorary society and campus correspondent for the Wyoming State Tribune of Cheyenne. He was also a member of the varsity wrestling team and an intramural boxing champion.

Upon graduation from the University of Wyoming, he later became state editor for the Wyoming State Tribune, as well as part owner of the Worland newspaper, where he was editor.

He left Worland in 1948 to work for the Rock Springs Rocket-Miner, eventually becoming managing editor. In 1961, he left the newspaper business to attend law school at the University of Wyoming, returning to Rock Springs to practice law until his retirement in 1996.

During his newspaper years, he served on the board of directors and president of the Wyoming Press Association. He served as chairman of the Sweetwater County Library Board. He was a member of the American Legion, Wyoming State Bar, Sweetwater County Bar, American Bar Association, University of Wyoming Alumni Association, Air Force Association, Veterans of the O.S.S., the Retired Officers Association, the University of Wyoming "W" Club and the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. He also served as president of the Sweetwater County Bar and on the board of Western Wyoming College Foundation.
