Wyoming Lawyer Issue: April, 2010 Legal Beat Kite to serve as next Chief Justice of Wyoming Supreme Court

Chief Justice Barton R. Voigt announced that the Justices of the Wyoming Supreme Court have elected Justice Marilyn S. Kite to be the next Chief Justice, effective upon the expiration of Justice Voigt's term on July 1, 2010.

Justice Kite, a native of Laramie, was appointed to the Supreme Court by Governor Jim Geringer and was sworn into office June 2, 2000. She received her B.A. in International Affairs from the University of Wyoming in 1970 with Honors and her J.D. from the University of Wyoming College of Law in 1974. Prior to her appointment to the Wyoming Supreme Court, Justice Kite served as Senior Assistant Attorney General for the State of Wyoming from 1974 through 1978. She entered private practice in 1979, joining the law firm of Holland and Hart. She was a Partner in the Jackson office until her appointment to the Wyoming Supreme Court. Justice Kte is married to Roy "Skip" Jacobson, Jr., and they have one son, Gus.

Justice Kite will become the thirty-sixth Justice to serve as Chief Justice and Wyoming's first female Chief Justice. In addition to her current duties, she will assume the administrative responsibilities of the Wyoming court system. During her four-year term, Justice Kte will serve as the Chair of the Board of Judicial Policy of Administration, Chair of the Judicial Nominating Commission, and as the Chief Justice of the Wyoming Supreme Court.

Mandatory professionalism CLE coming to Cody

The Wyoming mandatory professionalism CLE course, Pathways to Professional Practice, will be offered on May 13, 2010, at the Park County Courthouse in Cody, Wyoming. The course begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 12:30 p.m.

This course will fulfill the requirements of Rule 3(b) of the Rules for Continuing Legal Education of Members of the Wyoming State Bar which mandates attendance within one year of admission for those admitted after July 1, 2003.
