On October 4, 2013, the Red Mass. will take place at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland, followed by a luncheon and speaker at the Portland Country Club in Falmouth. This annual event for the bench, bar and those involved in the administration of justice in Maine occurs at the beginning of the judicial year.

Past speakers include judges such as Justice Antonin Scalia of the United States Supreme Court, Judge Louis Kornreich of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Maine, Judge John Woodcock of the U.S. District Court for the District of Maine, and Justice Robert Clifford of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court; academics such as Professor Christian Potholm from Bowdoin College and John Garvey, the former dean of Boston College Law School; local practitioners such as Ralph Lancaster; and Dennis Maher, who was exonerated of violent crimes for which he was convicted due to the efforts of the Innocence Project.

This year's Red Mass. luncheon speaker is Rabbi David Dalin II, Professor of History and Politics at Ave Maria University in Ave Maria, Florida. Rabbi Dalin is a widely published scholar of American Jewish History and Catholic-Jewish relations. He received his B.A from the University of California at Berkeley, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He received his MA. and Ph.D. from Brandeis University. He also received his Rabbinical Ordination, and a second M.A., from the Jewish Theological Seminary.

Rabbi Dalin has written extensively on Catholic-Jewish relations and the history of the relationship between the Papacy and the Jews. Rabbi Dalin's much-discussed article on "Pius XII and the Jews, " was published in the Weekly Standard and reprinted in Inside the Vatican, published in Rome.

Rabbi Dalin is the author, co-author or editor of eleven books, including The Presidents of the United States and the Jews. His book The Myth of Hitler's Pope: How Pope Pius XII Rescued Jews from the Nazis, has been translated into French, Spanish and Italian. He is also co-editor of the book John Paul II and the Jewish People: A Jewish-Christian Dialogue and serves on the Advisory Council of the journal First Things.

The Red Mass. is an ancient Catholic celebration. The earliest-recorded Mass. was held in Paris in 1245 to invoke the guidance of the Holy Spirit on the judges of the ecclesiastical courts. This...
