David J. Burge, partner at Smith, Gambrell & Russell, LLP, was appointed to the Georgia Board of Community Affairs by Gov. Brian Kemp. The Board oversees the Georgia Department of Community Affairs, which manages the state's programs, services and grants for Georgia's municipal governments, housing authorities and downtown development authorities.

Merchant & Gould P.C. announced that the firm achieved Mansfield Certification status for 2020, after completing a 12-month self-study designed to boost the representation of diverse lawyers in firm leadership. Created by Diversity Lab, a data company that leverages research and behavior, the Mansfield Rule Certification measures whether law firms have affirmatively considered women, attorneys of color, LGBTQ+ attorneys and attorneys with disabilities—at least 30% of the candidate pool—for recruitment, governance roles, equity partner promotions and inclusion in formal pitch presentations to clients.

Retired trial lawyer James M. Thomas announced the publication of "Speaking in the Courthouse: A Guide for Trial Lawyers and Advocates," which covers construction of forensic speech and its persuasive delivery.

Attorney Stacey M. Cameron announced the release of "Grateful As Ever Daily Quarantine Notes: Finding Solace During the Coronavirus Pandemic," which she co-authored with her daughter, J. Cameron. More information about the book can be found at www.gratefulaseverbook.com.

The Worker's Injury Law & Advocacy Group (WILG) presented its Distinguished Service Award to Thomas Holder of Gerber & Holder Workers' Compensation Attorneys. The Distinguished Service Award is given to individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary commitment and service to WILG and injured workers.

Brian D. Burgoon of The Burgoon Law Firm, LLC, was appointed to serve as the 2020-21 chair of the Program Evaluation Committee of The Florida Bar Board of Governors, which provides in-depth review and evaluations of The Florida Bar's existing and prospective programs, sections and committees. Burgoon also is serving his eighth term on The Florida Bar Executive Committee, which acts on behalf of The Florida Bar in between the bi-monthly Board of Governors meetings, addressing matters relating to policy issues, legislative positions, the selection of nominees to the Florida governor for the judicial nominating commissions, and disciplinary matters.
